Sermon for Sunday July 2nd, 2006
Indescribable Gift by Scott Terrell
2 Corinthians 9:15-9:15
Indescribable!
2 Corinthians 9:15 “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.” (NIV)
How do you describe the indescribable? How can you tell someone about an
indescribable gift? How do you describe to someone the gift that God has given
us? First let’s realize something. If it is truly indescribable you cannot
describe it. Paul is telling us that in this scripture. We cannot explain what
it is. The Bible in words try to describe him. Words cannot describe his glory.
Words will never-ever amount to the glory of Jesus. We will never ever be able
to speak enough of his glory. God gave us something in that manger that is truly
indescribable.
On Good Morning America one morning around Christmas they were sharing about
indescribable gifts. With an $80,000 you can put a down payment on a Jaguar car.
The rest of the bill will come later around $575,000.00. Another one is a
$100,00 toilet seat. It is gold and diamonds. $10,000.00 for car wax. I guess if
you pay over $600,000 for a car you can afford that kind of wax. If you really
want to spoil your baby how about a $10,000 pacifier.
Have you ever received a gift that was indescribable? NO! You can describe gifts
given to you. The color, the size, and how it was given. Advertisers will go to
all lengths to describe their product to you. But how in this world will you
begin to describe the love of Jesus? How we even begin to tell of God’ love?
A wonderful preacher by the name of S.M. Lockridge pastored Calvary Baptist
Church in San Diego, CA. talked about our King. When I was doing my homework for
this sermon his sermon kept coming back to me. He described our Lord about as
good as it is going to get. He notes blew me away. I would like to share with
you tonight what Pastor Lockridge spoke of when talking about our gift. The gift
from God.
(exert from S.M. Lockridge’s “My King”)
- The Bible says my king is the king of the Jews

philosophy

- He sympathizes and he saves…he strengthens and sustains
- He guards and he guides…he heals the sick
- He cleansed the lepers…he forgives the sinners
- He discharges debtors…he delivers the captive
- He defends the feeble…he blesses the young
- He serves the unfortunate…he regards the aged

- I wonder do you know him?
- He’s the key to knowledge…he’s the wellspring of wisdom
- He’s the doorway of deliverance…he’s the pathway of peace

- His life is matchless…his goodness is limitless
- His mercy is everlasting…his love never changes
- His word is enough…his grace is sufficient
- His reign is righteous…his yoke is easy
- and his burden is light… do you really know him?
-I wish I could describe him to you… cause he is
- Indescribable…he’s incomprehensible
- He’s invincible…he’s irrestable
- You can’t get him out of your mind…you can’t get him off your hands
- You can’t out live him … and you can’t live without him
- The Pharisees couldn’t stand him…but they found out they couldn’t stop him
- Pilate couldn’t find any fault in him… Herod couldn’t kill him
- Death couldn’t handle him…and glory to God the grave couldn’t hold him!!!”
Dou you know him? Do you know this incredible gift? Have you ever accepted this
gift that God has given? Do you trust him to be your Lord and Savior? You may
know of him but do you really know him?
Once at a church convention they had two featured speakers. One was a professor
from a renowned seminary. The other was an old country preacher who been in the
ministry for 50 years. The professor was to speak first and he spoke a great
lecture about Christ being a Sheppard to his flock. His lecture was spoken
perfectly. The lecture was backed by theological thinking of the day. He was
well educated on the Gospel of Christ. He delivered it perfectly. Then the old
preacher took his turn and as only God would have it he too felt led to speak
about Jesus leading his flock. Except he fumbled his words with country twang
and southern accents. When the old preacher was through there was not a dry eye
in the house. The professor was puzzled. Why did the “country preacher” move
them to tears when his was spoken so much better? So he asked the preacher why?
The preacher looked at him and said” You spoke about the Sheppard, but son I
know the Sheppard.”
Do you know him today? The gift must be received. It’s available to everyone,
but God will not force it on you. We have to receive it. We have to take the
package, open it, and receive it. We each have to make the decision to receive
Jesus into our lives.
Now maybe you’ve opened the gift and now it is sitting on the shelf getting
dusty. Your to busy or to distracted to take it down. May be tonight you need to
get it down. Don’t put Christ on a shelf. Live the gift, love the gift, but most
of all accept the gift.
